How to Prepare for Mudslides

As emergency crews still work to contain wildfires that destroyed thousands of acres and hundreds of properties, mudslides could pose another possible threat for residents in Northern and Southern California. The massive fires that burned away hillsides and mountainous forests, also demolished almost 100% of protective scrappy bushes, called chaparral, that help hold back mudslides and flooding.

Even though California is currently dealing with years of drought, just a small amount of rain could cause a mudslide. There are things you can do to prepare for the possibility of a landslip. Here are some valuable tips to help you get ready.

  • If there were previous slides, learn where debris and mud flowed. Talk to a landscape engineer, or construction professional, about making changes to help protect your property.
  • Keep your phone charged and local first responders, police and fire, programmed into your contact list.
  • Be aware of warnings for heavy rainfall, especially if you live in areas susceptible to slides.
  • Stay on top of emergency information being shared by local emergency teams, and become familiar with evacuation plans.
  • Take photos, and video, of your property before any damage occurs.
  • Talk with your Independent Agent about insurance considerations for your property and cars.  MAPFRE Insurance has a network of independent Insurance Agents that want to help you understand your options.

A slide is much more than just mud. It can be full of trees, boulders and debris that weigh tons, getting pushed at a rapid speed to you and your property.

  • Listen for strange sounds that could be trees cracking or boulders knocking together.
  • Be careful of the roads, especially those that run along sloped land.
  • Listen to authorities. They often have the best information and know whether you should travel to a secure location.
  • If you are ordered to evacuate, don’t waste time grabbing personal property. Take your family and pets to a secure location immediately.

You should keep an emergency kit stocked and ready in the event of any crisis. Consider having a kit in your home and car.

Don’t wait for the prediction of rain and a possible mudslide. Get more advice on how to financially protect your family and valuables, contact an Insurance Agent today.

Most importantly, stay safe.
