Fundación MAPFRE held the event commemorating its 50th anniversary today in Madrid. It was presided over by His Majesty the King, with the participation of Elma Saiz, Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, Antonio Huertas, President of Fundación MAPFRE, as well as other authorities and representatives and beneficiaries of some of the social entities that have collaborated with the foundation in this time.

His Majesty the King congratulated Fundación MAPFRE for its 50 years of history, for its “social mission, solidarity, dedication and commitment. There are countless specific projects, small actions, hands outstretched, gestures that have changed people’s lives.” He also thanked the Foundation for its social work, as “every society needs business activity, but it has to do its best to build a dense network of solidarity, social action, to boost our human capital, not only at a professional level, but also in values” and encouraged the Foundation to “increase its capacity to reach more people in the future.”

During the ceremony, Fundacion MAPFRE named His Majesty the King an “Honorary Volunteer” of the foundation, for which he showed particular enthusiasm and shared it with representatives of 9,800 volunteers who collaborate actively annually with Fundación MAPFRE in nearly 30 countries, some of them dealing with emergency situations, such as the flooding in Valencia, Spain or the flooding in southern Brazil in 2024.

“We focus on social matters, what’s most urgent”

Antonio Huertas, President of Fundación MAPFRE, referred to the origin of the foundation, which was created in 1975 as a reflection of the social commitment to people and to the societies where MAPFRE carries out its activity. “In these 50 years, the foundation has shown strong social commitment with a constant focus on people, especially the most vulnerable, in collaboration with over 2,000 social organizations, with thousands of volunteers in dozens of countries and strengthening the development of people through the education, nutrition and health in nearly 30 countries. The President of Fundación MAPFRE also stressed that “we have the obligation to help, it is our responsibility, we owe it to the underprivileged” and noted that Fundación MAPFRE “we are very proud to do so and to receive in return the most valuable of rewards, that which is emotional. We focus on social matters because, unfortunately, that is the most urgent. Entities in the third sector like us are more essential than ever and we provide real solutions,” he said.

Breaking the cycle of poverty

The event, which was attended by more than 450 guests, gave visibility to the areas of activity with the greatest impact, such as inclusion and social and labor development that Fundación MAPFRE is carrying out on the ground. This is especially so in Latin America, with the aim of breaking the cycle of poverty and transforming the lives of millions of people.

Over the past 50 years, the international social projects it has carried out, with investment of more than 315 million euros, have had a positive impact on the lives of more than 15 million people. Luis Padilla, founder of the Asociación Manabí, the international cooperation organization with which Fundación MAPFRE works in Guatemala to offer academic support, and Pilar Aural, President of Pato Amarillo, which annually helps around 2,000 people with essential goods, have explained the important role that education and workforce integration play in creating opportunities.

More than 2,000 research projects

Fundación MAPFRE has always considered research a key contribution to the development of society, having invested more than 170 million euros in this area. Over the course of these 50 years, it has funded more than 2,200 projects related to health and injury prevention, such as Cell Therapy Program for the Treatment of Spinal Cord Injury, in collaboration with the Puerta de Hierro University Hospital in Madrid.

The event was attended by Dr. Valentín Fuster, who is supported by Fundación MAPFRE through the Fundación Pro C and the doctor, Mercedes Zurita, researcher and supervisor of the Cell Therapy Unit of the Neurosurgery Service of the Puerta de Hierro Hospital in Madrid, which provides assistance to nearly 90 patients who benefit from the first treatment with an advanced drug therapy authorized by the Spanish Medicines Agency, a milestone in Spain and Europe. Both highlighted the importance of support for research and of great Spanish researchers, both inside and outside Spain.

179 million beneficiaries

In its 50 years of history, Fundación MAPFRE has invested more than 1.14 billion euros, which translates into thousands of activities that have been provided hope, health, education and well-being to more than 179 million people.

Over these five decades, Fundación MAPFRE has become one of the leading global foundations, especially in Latin America, where it carries out essential work to continue closing inequality gaps and improving people’s lives.
