How to Change a Flat Tire

Dealing with a flat tire can be frustrating, especially if you’re unsure how to fix it. However, changing a flat tire is an essential skill every driver should learn.

Some of the things you should keep in your car include:

  • A properly inflated spare tire
  • A jack
  • A lug wrench
  • A flashlight
  • Gloves

If you don’t have the option to call for emergency assistance, there are steps you can take to change a flat tire safely and efficiently.

Find a safe location
Pull over safely and turn on hazard lights. If you are on the highway, use a rest area, exit ramp with a dedicated pull-off, or a wide, flat shoulder if possible.

Prepare your vehicle
Apply the parking brake to prevent your car from rolling.

Take off the hubcap
If the tire has a hubcap, use a lug wrench or screwdriver to remove it carefully.

Loosen the lug nuts
Turn the lug nuts counterclockwise while the tire is still on the ground.

Raise the car
Raise the vehicle with your jack until the tire lifts. Check the manufacturer’s instructions, as the jack points may differ.

Remove the flat tire
Once you elevate the car, remove the lug nuts and set them aside. Gently pull the flat tire straight off the hub and place it aside.

Mount the spare tire
Place the spare tire against the wheel hub and press it onto the hubcap until it fits securely. Tighten the lug nuts by hand, ensuring they are correctly aligned.

Lower the car and tighten the lug nuts
Using the jack, gently lower the car back to the ground. Once the tire touches the ground, securely tighten the lug nuts.

Replace the hubcap
If your car has a hubcap, securely put it back on the tire, ensuring it fits tightly.

After you change your flat tire, visit a mechanic to examine it for any necessary repairs or replacements. Keep in mind that most spare tires are not meant for long-term use.
