5 Massachusetts Road Trips for this Summer

It’s that long awaited time of the year. The sun is out and shining. The beaches and mountains of New England beckon. And after a year of working from home, you’re itching to get out there. Whether you’re looking for a week-long getaway or a quick day trip, these five Massachusetts destinations are just a drive away.

A word to the wise: Before you head out on the open road, make sure you and your car are properly covered. Double check your MA car insurance coverage includes everything you need before your summer road trip. And if you’re looking to save on your Massachusetts car insurance, check out our tips.

Cape Cod

Nothing says summer more than a day (or two or three) at the beach. So pack up the car, kids, and beach gear and head to the Cape. If you’re traveling with your dog, we have tips for that too! With ample beaches and some of the freshest seafood, it’s hard to be disappointed. Scope out the seals on the outer Cape, cycle a section of the 25-mile Rail Trail, or join a kayak adventure hosted by the Cape Cod National Seashore. Cap off the perfect day at the shore under the glow of the Wellfleet drive-in.

The Berkshires

As beautiful as the Berkshires are in winter, they’re arguably more fun in summer. Pack some snacks and lots of water and head for the hills to cool down (don’t forget to keep your car cool too!). A quick but strenuous hike to Bash Bish Falls reveals MA’s tallest waterfall and respite from the heat. If the outdoors aren’t your thing, expand your horizons by exploring the creative exhibits featured at MASS Moca.

Amherst

A perfect rainy-day destination, Amherst boasts claim to a menagerie of museums. Honor the late Eric Carle with a visit to the famous child book author’s museum. Visit the birthplace and home of the famous poet, Emily Dickenson. Or stop by Amherst College’s campus where the Beneski Museum of Natural History is home to ice age animals of the past.

Rockport

For a bit of history, head to the sleepy seaside town of Rockport where artists flock for inspiration. Take a stroll down Bearskin Neck, home to the iconic inner harbor. Stop by the historic Old Stone Fort, where, left without defense, the townspeople heroically took to slinging rocks with their stockings to fight back the British in the War of 1812.

Worcester

Recent revitalization has given new life to Massachusetts’ second most populated city. Support local by stopping in at the Canal District shops. When you’ve worked up an appetite, wander over to Worcester Public Market for some homegrown goodness. No quintessential American summer is complete without a trip to the ballfield. Welcome the WooSox to the area and you may even catch a future Red Sox star in the making.

Before you hit the road, make sure you’re protected with the right amount of Massachusetts car insurance. As the #1 home and auto insurer in the state, MAPFRE Insurance knows how important it is to get the right car insurance at an affordable price.
