From the billboards of the Mass Pike, all the way to Fenway Park, and from your inbox to your mailbox, car insurance advertising is everywhere. You frequently hear promises about saving money by switching to another company.
Everyone wants to save money on car insurance in Massachusetts, but what many drivers don’t realize is that their “discounted” rate may actually provide less coverage.
Here are 8 easy steps for how to save on car insurance in Massachusetts without skimping on coverage:
1. Raise your deductible.
Increasing your deductible from $500 to $1,000 will likely save you a few hundred dollars a year. However, because everyone’s financial situation is different, make sure you consult your Massachusetts independent agent for advice on what options are best for you.
2. Keep your driving record clean.
It sounds simple, but it’s a factor in calculating your premium: abide by the speed limit and other traffic laws to avoid violations.
When purchasing a new car, consider how investing in newer automated safety features such as lane departure, adaptive cruise control and emergency braking could help you avoid collisions, especially on busy Boston highways.
3. Stick around for loyalty discounts and perks.
Insurance companies like MAPFRE like to reward loyal customers with discounts and special perks. In Massachusetts, MAPFRE’s Disappearing Deductible Credits accrue for each consecutive year of clean driving, up to $300.
4. Pay in full.
Many Massachusetts insurance companies, like MAPFRE, offer discounts if you pay for your insurance for the year in full at renewal instead of in monthly installments.
You may save money by signing up for auto pay as well. Massachusetts customers save more when they sign up for an account and choose e-bill and electronic delivery of policy documents.
5. Keep learning.
Defensive driving courses provide valuable crash avoidance techniques and can help save money on car insurance. In Massachusetts, MAPFRE Insurance has partnered with In Control to offer policyholders $50 off the course fee and up to a 10% auto policy discount after completion.
6. Bundle your insurance policies.
When your home is also insured with MAPFRE, you will receive an additional discount on your Massachusetts car insurance. If you insure your boat or have an Umbrella policy with MAPFRE, you could also save.
7. Consider value programs.
You may pay a little more per month (usually less than $10 a month) to add Accident Forgiveness to your Massachusetts auto policy, but if you do get in a qualifying accident, your premium typically won’t increase.
Similarly, you might pay a little more for loan/lease coverage, but it may pay for itself in peace of mind because it could cover the gap between what you owe and the actual cash value of your car.
8. Ask about extra discounts.
In Massachusetts, MAPFRE Insurance customers who ride in or donate $25 or more to the Pan Mass Challenge may save up to 5% on their car insurance. From good students to low mileage commuters, there are discounts for every type of driver. Ask your independent agent to help identify additional discounts you may qualify for.
