Graciela Iturbide: Serious Game

Fundación MAPFRE presents the first major retrospective of the Mexican photographer in New York

Oct 16, 2025 – Jan 12, 2026

Fundación MAPFRE and the International Center of Photography (ICP), one of New York’s most prestigious cultural institutions, have opened Graciela Iturbide: Serious Game, the first comprehensive retrospective of the acclaimed Mexican photographer’s work in the city.

Curated by Carlos Gollonet, Chief Curator of Photography at Fundación MAPFRE, the exhibition features nearly 200 photographs from the Foundation’s art collections, spanning five decades of Iturbide’s career.

Graciela Iturbide holds a special place in Fundación MAPFRE’s photography program. Her work was featured in one of the first exhibitions when the program launched in 2009, and her photographs were among the earliest acquisitions in the Foundation’s photography collection. Over the years, this collection has grown to become the most significant archive of her work outside of Mexico.

Internationally recognized, Iturbide’s photography blends poetic imagery with documentary style, rich in cultural and social references. Her contributions to the art world have earned her prestigious awards, including the Hasselblad Award (2008), Mexico’s Gold Medal for Fine Arts (2024), and most recently, the Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts.

Following its presentation in New York, the exhibition will travel in 2026 to the San Diego Museum of Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SF MoMA).
