Fundación Real Madrid
Integrating young immigrants through educational sports activities
Educating children about the positive values of team sports using basketball to foster participation and encouraging the integration of immigrant children are the goals of this program which combines education with practicing sports.
The Sports Achievement Academy is the result of a collaboration between Fundación Real Madrid, the Teach for America association, Fundación MAPFRE and ENLACE, a school in Lawrence, Massachusetts which offers non-English speaking immigrant children social support to help them integrate quickly into American culture.
With a combination of education and games, this program seeks to encourage interest in sports by using basketball as their main tool. The students will receive help with their studies and be given English language learning support, and will improve their academic performance and learn to work in a team. They will also be taught the values of respect and team spirit which are inherent to playing sports.
The ENLACE students have the chance to assimilate into society and make friends with the help of something as universal as playing sports.
